The 23rd Festival Biarritz Amérique Latine ended on Sunday 5th October. As each year, the festival was the occasion to discover and award quality latino films. Europa Distribution has a partnership with Biarritz and selects with the festival a member to be part of the Long Feature Films Jury.
This year, it is Joan Aguilar from Imagine (BE) who was part of the jury presided by Atiq Rahimi (writer and director), alongside María Kodama (writer), Miguel Courtois (director) and Catherine Dussart (producer).
They awarded El Abrazo (best film prize) to RETOUR A ITHAQUE by Laurent Cantet, « who achieves an authentic cinematographic approach of human being, making the audience feel the weight of desillusions and wounds inflicted by emigration and a too quickly evanished social reality. »
RETOUR A ITHAQUE is a coproduction between France and Cuba.
As a reminder, international distributors can get support from Unifrance when they release French films : more info on their website http://en.unifrance.org/corporate/services-for-professionals
– The Prize of Jury went to Mexican film LAS BÚSQUEDAS by José Luis Valle, « a minimalist tale where every single moment is subtly charged with details and emotions (as) the character lives his odyssey in a beautifully filmed, black and white Mexico City.»
To our knowledge, LAS BUSQUEDAS doesn’t have a sales agent yet.
The award for Best Male Act was attributed to both Hector Noguera and Néstor Guzzini for the « astonishing comic duo » they form in MR KAPLAN and it is Erica Rivas who won the Best Female Act for her « absolutely kicky performance » in RELATOS SALVAJES .
Thank you to Joan Aguilar for his appreciation and quotes on the films !
